Why does BoulderSausage.com shipping seem so expensive?

We appreciate you valuing the superior quality of our brand.  We know you want to feel good and safe about your online purchases. It is important to us that you are fully satisfied when you receive your order and that your sausage or bacon safely arrives fresh and cold. In order for us to safely deliver our perishable product, it is flash frozen, vacuum packed, and then loaded into a Styrofoam cooler. Additionally, we line the cooler with a respective amount of dry ice, which will keep your purchase plenty cold throughout its journey to you. Due to these safety measures, your package’s shipping weight is naturally higher and increases a great deal the further it needs to travel (as more dry ice must be used). For this reason, shipping costs tend to seem higher.

We recognize that we all have financial constraints and we value your dollars, so we have partnered with UPS and negotiated some of the best possible shipping rates in the market. Rest assured, we have passed those savings directly on to you, so you pay exactly what your actual shipping costs are with NO added  “handling” fees. Even with these massive discounts, shipping may feel costly, but when you consider the respective weight of your final package, you’re saving up to $65 off regular UPS rates.

If you are ordering a large amount of product, your shipment may be broken into two separate packages in order to obtain the best shipping rates. If you are ordering over 15 cases, you may receive an error message stating that shipping is not available. If you receive this message, please give us a call at 866-529-0595 and we would be happy to arrange your order.

Please note: due to cost efficiency and federal regulations on Dry Ice we only offer Ground shipping.

Why is the product I buy online frozen?

We understand you want to be sure the frozen product has the same quality as our fresh product. We want to ensure your order is safe and cold when you receive it. Due to airline regulations, we can only use ground transportation. The product is vacuum packaged and flash frozen to ensure it is cold and safe when you receive it. We recommend you use the product as soon as convenient due to the impact of freezing. For optimum flavor and quality, store sausage up to 7 days in the fridge or 60 days in the freezer. For your safety, thawed product should be cooked and consumed within 10 days.

Do you still make your German sausage?

Unfortunately, King Soopers and Safeway made a decision (beyond our control) to discontinue our German sausage in their stores. If it was our decision, it most certainly would still be available on the store shelves.

We know how much our German Sausage is missed and we value your loyalty, so our team has worked hard to bring back our German Sausage however possible. We are excited to announce that our German Sausage is now available for order through our website and through Amazon. All orders are shipped in a cooler with dry ice and come vacuum packed so you can easily place in the freezer for future use or toss in the fridge for this week’s menu.

Where does your pork come from, and how is it processed?

We understand you are concerned about how the hogs are raised, treated and processed…we share the same concern. We source our pork from trusted producers in the Midwest. Our producers raise and process the hogs in a humane manner as regulated and inspected by the USDA.

Are you a USDA Facility?

We agree you should be able to trust and have confidence our products meet food safety standards. We are regularly inspected by and regulated by USDA. We have a full-time USDA inspector onsite daily. In addition, we adhere to a food safety program (HACPP) that includes best practices and we conduct third-party audits of our procedures on an annual basis.

Are BOULDER SAUSAGE brand products low sodium?

We recognize sodium is a concern in many individual diets and may need to be minimized to meet dietary restrictions. We do use the minimum salt in our recipes necessary to ensure the flavor still tastes great. We have reduced our sodium to one of the lowest levels in the industry. Please review our nutritional labels on our website to ensure our sodium content meets your needs.

Do your Products contain sugar?

The only change we have made to the recipes since Don’s Cheese and Meat began is the removal of sugar from all but two (2) raw sausage products. The only two raw products that still contain sugar today are Hot Italian and Cranberry Orange. Hot Italian does contain sugar as an ingredient in the spice blend, however, it is so minuscule that there is actually less than 0 grams of sugar per serving. Cranberry Orange actually uses Agave as opposed to cane sugar.

In handcrafting our bacon we do use turbinado sugar in their preparation process, but once again there is less than 0g per serving.

Do your products contain any preservatives or chemicals?

Many food processors use preservatives and chemicals to enhance flavor and extend shelf life. Boulder Sausage believes in producing only all-natural products. We use only lean pork and natural spices in our products. Our raw sausage products NEVER contain any of the following:

  • Added Water
  • Fillers
  • Chemicals
  • MSG
  • Nitrates/Nitrites
  • Allergens
  • Artificial Ingredients

What does Natural Ingredients really mean?

We agree there is a lot of confusion about what all-natural really means. According to USDA guidelines: Natural pork products contain no artificial ingredients and must be minimally processed. The label must include a statement explaining the meaning of the term natural (such as “no artificial ingredients”, “minimally processed”, or “No Nitrites or Nitrates”). We are committed to using only FRESH, premium, natural pork and spice in our products. We do not use any artificial ingredients. Our process includes only minimum grinding and mixing of spices (our definition of minimally processed).

Why is your package 14oz instead of 16oz?

We all want to be confident we are receiving value for our food dollars. Many sausage companies offer larger per ounce packages (gross weight) to convince consumers that they are getting the most for their money. However, it is the net weight (the weight after a product has been cooked) that provides the true value.

For example, a 16-ounce package of sausage before cooking (gross weight) could only be 14 ounces (net weight) after cooking that same sausage. This 2-ounce loss is due to the fat content in the product, additives, and fillers added to those brands. So, the consumer is only getting 14 ounces of product but paid for 16 ounces.

We choose to offer the consumer exactly what the package says, 14 ounces. We use lean premium cuts of pork and we don’t add fillers to our products to increase the weight, not even water. When the consumer purchases a package of our sausage, they can be sure they are getting the most value for their budget.

Why doesn’t your product shrink when I cook it?

We agree most meat products shrink when cooked. The shrinkage is due to the amount of fat content, water and fillers added to the product. BOULDER SAUSAGE brand sausages use only lean premium cuts of pork (82% lean). In addition, we don’t add any water or fillers to our products.

What is the best way to cook BOULDER SAUSAGE brand sausage so it doesn’t stick to the pan?

We all want to use the best methods for preparing BOULDER SAUSAGE brand products for our families. Our products stick due to the low fat content of the product. We recommend:

  • In a pan at medium heat with a small amount of EVOO or water (to avoid sticking). Do not cover with a lid. Rotate/stir occasionally. Cook for approximately 15-18 minutes (~12 minutes for breakfast links).
  • On the grill over medium heat with lid closed for 15-18 minutes. Flipping
    occasionally.
  • In the oven at 350° with a small amount of oil to avoid sticking. Cook for approximately 15-18 minutes (~12 minutes for breakfast links).

For optimum flavor: we do not recommend boiling or microwaving our product.
Regardless of cooking method, ensure internal product temp reaches 160° before consuming.

How long can I freeze your product and what is the best way to freeze your product?

We understand your concern about freezing our product and whether it maintains nutrition, flavor, and quality. Freezing does affect the tenderness, juiciness, and vitamins of pork due to the ice crystals formed in the meat. To minimize the effect of ice crystals, we recommend that you not freeze our sausage in the retail packaging. You should remove the product from its original packaging and place it in freezer bags or re-wrap in your favorite freezer storage product (our bacon and vacuum-pack products can be frozen in the package you purchased it in). For optimum flavor, quality, and nutrition we recommend you use the product within 60 days of purchase. We never recommend using frozen product beyond 6 months past expiry.

When you’re ready to use your frozen product, simply move the product from the freezer to the refrigerator approximately 24hrs before you intend to use it. We only recommend thawing our product in the refrigerator as thawing meat at room temperature, in hot water, or via other “quick” methods can foster bacteria growth. For your safety, thawed product should always be stored below 40°F and cooked and consumed within 10 days.

What does ABF mean and why does it matter?

We are all concerned about discovering healthier options to meet our healthy lifestyles. We want to be informed and educated about what is in our food. ABF is the abbreviation for Antibiotic Free. Overuse of antibiotics by humans can lead to the body building up a resistance to them.   Ingesting products that used antibiotics raises concerns and their presence alone is disturbing to many. For animals raised with antibiotics, the USDA requires there be no antibiotics in the animal system prior to processing. The USDA randomly tests animal liver and kidneys on the processing line to ensure there is no residual antibiotics.

To be labeled as ABF, the USDA regulations state: A meat producer must provide the USDA documentation demonstrating that the animals were raised without antibiotics to be considered an Antibiotic Free product.

Due to consumer demand, we produce and sell products that are both antibiotic free and not antibiotic free. For products that are not ABF, our suppliers certify the pork to be free of any antibiotic residues prior to processing. The processors accomplish this by withholding antibiotics for a period sufficient to ensure the antibiotics are no longer present in the animal.

For our products labeled as ABF, our suppliers certify antibiotics were never, ever used.

What are the spices and natural flavorings?

We are all concerned with what is added to our food. We understand that you want to trust the products you’re consuming do not contain any items that may be harmful to your kin.
